The pace of life in the north-eastern region of Thailand, is generally more relaxed than in other areas. Consequently, the people often appear more friendly. Isaan food is famous for its variety of ingredients and pungency. Particular favourites are som tam (a spicy papaya salad) and kai yang (roasted spiced chicken).Throughout the region there is a distinct Laos and Khmer influence which is reflected in the local dialect, and the Angkor Wat like monuments near Surin and Buri Ram. That Phanom on the Laos border has a particularly fine example of this style of architecture.
North of Udorn Thani is Ban Phu which offers prehistoric cave drawings. To the east lies Ban Chiang with its ancient ceramic and bronze sculptures.
The best silk in Thailand is said to come from the areas around Roi Et and Nakhorn Ratchasima (Khorat). This is certainly the place to visit for bargains or an insight into silk weaving techniques. Nong Khai in the northern part of the region is the only place where visitors can cross the Maekhong river to Vientiane in Laos. Further west is Leoi which is one of Thailand’s most unspoiled provinces.

Nakhon Pathom is a very old city which has been a center of the Dvaravati civilisation. Over 2,000 years ago, a Buddhist missionary Fri India was sent to introduce Buddhism and its philosophy to a land called Suwannaphum, which had Nakhonpathom as its capital. Phra Pathom Chedi was the important structure of the kingdom. The Prosperous city was abandoned in the 12th century. Krabi, which sits on the banks of the Krabi River, is located 180km by road from Phuket and almost 1000km from Bangkok. This coastal province covers an area of 4,709 square kilometres. Krabi province is located 170 km south of Phuket and 800km from Bangkok and best known for it’s Phi Phi islands and the Susan Hoi seashell graveyard which is the only one of it’s kind in Southeast Asia and is approximately 75 Million years old.There are more then 100 islands surrounded by crystal clear waters best for snorkeling, diving and sailing. They can be accessed by public or longtail boats. Four national parks, tall limestone outcrops, caves, mangrove forests and hot springs invite you for a visit. Day trips are available to Phi Phi Islands, Koh Lanta, Trang and other islands.
Ao Nang is Krabi mainland’s most popular beach. It is still much less developed than Phuket and Koh Samui. For that reason it is a pleasant laid-back beach of great charm, spectacular sea views to the Poda Island group, and a varied choice of accommodation from Bht 100 to over Bht 2,500. New restaurants, scuba diving services, shops and day tours are being established all the time. Ao Nang is more a tourist beach than a traveller’s one. Many families from Northern Europe holiday here between November and April.
The sea gradient is shallow and suitable for children. The eastern end of the beach around Last Cafe is more relaxing with better tree shade and a greater distance from longtail boats. It is possible to walk around the cape at low tide from Last Cafe to deserted and untouched Pai Plong beach. Compared to Railay, Ao Nang offers a better choice of eating, drinking, and shopping facilities.

Thai Phrases - Don’t Be Afraid To Try - Just Remember To Smile The Thais are an extremely tolerant people, I have been butchering their language for years, and they still talk to me! The Thais really appreciate it when you try and speak a little of their language. The Thais place an enormous importance on being polite and having an easy going personality “Jai Yen” (cool heart). If you are a man always end your sentences with the word “khrap” and if you are a women, always end your sentences with “kha”. So “Thank You” would be - “Cop Coon Khrap” for a man and “Cop Coon Kha” for a woman. You will sometimes hear Thai men shorten “khrap” to “khap” and women will shorten “kha” to “ha”. But it all means the same thing, and both are considered polite, |
